Diabetic Foot Care: Essential Tips to Prevent Complications

Health TipsNovember 5, 20246 min readDr. Praveen Kumrah

Diabetes can cause nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor blood circulation in your feet, making them vulnerable to infections, ulcers, and in severe cases, amputation. Proper foot care is one of the most important aspects of diabetes management, yet it's often overlooked.

Inspect your feet daily. Look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or any changes in skin color or temperature. If you can't see the bottom of your feet, use a mirror or ask a family member to help. Wash your feet daily with warm (not hot) water, dry them thoroughly—especially between the toes—and apply moisturizer to prevent cracking, avoiding the areas between toes.

Never walk barefoot, even indoors. Wear well-fitting shoes and clean socks at all times. Avoid crossing your legs for long periods, as this can restrict blood flow. Trim your toenails straight across and file the edges to prevent ingrown nails.

At Essen Health Care, our podiatry department specializes in diabetic foot care. We recommend that patients with diabetes have a comprehensive foot exam at least once a year, and more frequently if you have neuropathy or circulation problems. Don't wait for a problem to develop—preventive care can save your feet and your life.
