Neurological Symptoms: When Should You See a Neurologist?

Health TipsOctober 15, 20245 min readDr. Pratibha Surathi

Your nervous system controls virtually every function in your body, so when something goes wrong, the symptoms can be varied and sometimes confusing. While occasional headaches or brief tingling in a hand are usually nothing to worry about, certain neurological symptoms deserve prompt evaluation.

See a neurologist if you experience frequent or severe headaches that don't respond to over-the-counter medication, chronic pain that hasn't been adequately explained, numbness, tingling, or weakness that persists or worsens, episodes of confusion or memory loss, seizures or loss of consciousness, tremors or involuntary movements, or difficulty with balance, coordination, or walking.

Many neurological conditions are highly treatable when caught early. Migraines, for example, can be managed with preventive medications and lifestyle modifications. Neuropathic pain—common in patients with diabetes—responds well to targeted therapies. Even conditions like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease have treatments that can significantly slow progression and maintain quality of life.

At Essen Health Care, our neurology team provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for a wide range of neurological conditions. We use advanced diagnostic tools including nerve conduction studies to pinpoint the source of your symptoms and develop effective treatment plans.
