How Telehealth Is Transforming Healthcare Access in Underserved Communities

NewsFebruary 1, 20255 min readDr. Sumir Sahgal

Since launching our telehealth program in 2022, Essen Health Care has conducted tens of thousands of virtual visits, connecting patients with their doctors from the comfort of their homes. For many residents of the Bronx, this has been transformative.

Telehealth eliminates common barriers to care: transportation challenges, time off work, childcare needs, and mobility limitations. For patients managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, regular virtual check-ins help maintain consistent monitoring without the burden of frequent in-person visits.

Our virtual care platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible. Patients can connect via smartphone, tablet, or computer, and our staff is available to help anyone who needs assistance with the technology. We also offer bilingual services to ensure that language is never a barrier to quality healthcare.

While telehealth is an excellent option for many types of appointments—follow-up visits, medication management, mental health counseling, and routine check-ins—some conditions still require in-person evaluation. Your Essen provider will always guide you to the appropriate level of care.
