Understanding High Blood Pressure: What Every Patient Should Know

PreventionJanuary 15, 20256 min readDr. Ananth Shankar

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often called the "silent killer" because it typically has no obvious symptoms. Yet it affects nearly half of all American adults and is a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

At Essen Health Care, we see patients every day who are surprised to learn their blood pressure is elevated. Regular screenings are essential because early detection allows for lifestyle modifications and, when necessary, medication to bring your numbers under control.

Several factors can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure, including a family history of hypertension, being overweight, a high-sodium diet, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol consumption, and chronic stress. African American and Hispanic communities are disproportionately affected, which is why our Bronx-based clinics prioritize blood pressure screening for every visit.

The good news is that high blood pressure is highly manageable. Simple changes—reducing salt intake, incorporating 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days, maintaining a healthy weight, and taking prescribed medications consistently—can dramatically lower your risk of complications. Talk to your Essen Health Care provider about creating a personalized plan to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.
